I worked at a pawn shop for 5 years.

I can’t tell you how many times I was told that

The lights were out because we cashed

the check when it was due

How many pregnant women

went without heat

How many children

watched their toys being

pushed across the counter

How many jaws I saw grinding away

How many times

I had the first two fingers

of a hand pointed at me

like a gun

I worked for 5 years at a pawn shop,

and it’s now that I don’t sleep well.
